Despite being a Technical Safety Leader at Rosetti Marino, Hina Arshad had always dreamt of a career in renewables – and WRS helped her get there, matching her to an open role at H2 Green Steel as a Process Safety Engineer. We even assisted her relocation from Italy to Sweden with her husband.
In this case study, Hina explains how WRS supported her throughout the process, and how she faced gender-based challenges in the industry…
My background
I previously worked in traditional oil and gas, but I’ve always been extremely passionate about renewables. I studied them as part of my university research, and I was curious to learn more about sustainability, green technology, and energy efficiency.
When I finished my research however, I discovered that there weren't many opportunities. Thankfully, over the last three years I’ve managed to find my footing – with such a powerful belief in sustainable development, I’m thrilled to be contributing to such an important sector, as I plan to do for the next decade and beyond.
The move to H2 Green Steel
I’m ecstatic to be working for H2 Green Steel, specifically on the world’s first hydrogen project that will be running in 2025 – this should make it one of the most sustainable energy sources.
H2 Green Steel is a startup constructing a large steel plant in northern Sweden, using only green hydrogen and renewables to significantly decrease the amount of climate pollution. This will limit emissions to almost zero by making, and then utilising, renewable hydrogen to turn raw iron-ore pellets into direct reduced iron or sponge iron. Afterwards, this will then be transformed into green steel via a renewable energy-powered electric arc furnace. I can’t wait to get started!
Challenges in the energy industry for women
While I feel lucky to work in this space, there are still many barriers blocking women from entry. It’s similar to other technology and engineering industries in that it’s difficult to get into roles related to leadership, project finance, and governance based on gender discrimination – though I’m seeing a gradual acceptance.
Limitations also exist for women with families and different responsibilities. Often, this means they can’t take the opportunity to go abroad, and so they have to decline positions.
While I was studying, my professor was the only female scientist professional in the industry – she’s always been my role model. She started working in the 1960s, facing significant struggle during that time, especially as she was working in a very new area – but she always powered through.
Working with WRS
Before I found my new job through WRS, transitioning to renewables was tough because I didn’t have the experience. But Alex Spruce, Recruitment Consultant at WRS, saw my profile on LinkedIn and felt I fitted the role requirements perfectly.
Alex was extremely prompt – an hour after meeting me, he got in touch to say he felt I was the most suitable candidate. It was a very smooth experience from there, with constant updates from him, unlike previous recruiters who had communicated poorly.
In addition, Alex was incredibly proactive and polite – plus, he really believed in me. Despite being offered another opportunity during the WRS recruitment process, Alex advised me not to accept it because he felt that I was so suited to this position. So instead, I waited – and landed my dream role.
Why I recommend WRS
I’m really grateful to WRS, and especially to Alex. In fact, I’ve already recommended another colleague to them – if you want to change roles in the energy sector, WRS is the best partner.
“I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude for your continuous support and unwavering faith in me throughout this process. Your guidance and encouragement have been invaluable, and I truly appreciate it.” - Hina Arshad
