HVAC Department Manager

Job description

The Engineering Group Leader (EGL) is the technical leader and resource coordinator within a discipline workgroup (ex.
Electrical Group Leader). This person works closely with Project Managers (PMs) and other EGLs to ensure the
engineering quality and timely, cost-effective completion of each project; collaborates with the Engineering Manager (EM)
and Project Engineers (PEs) in monitoring project progress; communicates regularly with the EM to discuss team
progress, needs, budgets, and schedules; contributes to engineering and productivity standards development across the
firm.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
? May perform and direct complex design duties under the oversight of the Engineering Manager. May not change
the scope of work or deviate from any other part of the contractual document or firm design guidelines without
prior approval.
Duties/Responsibilities:
? Operations
o Directs the day-to-day work of group technical staff
? Includes coordination of staff work assignments
o Responsible for group management of project-level schedules (i.e., on-time delivery) and trade budgets
o Participates in, and coordinates and encourages group technical staff participation in, assigned firm
initiatives
o Responsible for performance management and annual appraisals of group technical staff, in consultation
with EM
o Responsible for training / development of group technical staff in consultation with Human Resources
? Client Relationships
o Supports business development activities in concert with CSG including client meetings and opportunity
interviews
o Participates in external outreach and marketing to increase the firm’s visibility
o Maintains rapport with client facility staff
? Technical Leadership
o Consults on and participates in the creation and / or presentation of Marketing materials aimed at
highlighting the firm’s engineering capabilities
o Mentors group technical staff
o Develops working relationships with preferred peers, vendors, contractors, societies, etc.
o Participates in the firm-wide thought leadership initiative through active participation in industry
professional societies and conferences, technical writing such as guides and blogs, technical
presentations
o Consults on and participates in the development of engineering design and production standards, both
within the discipline and firm-wide
o Innovates and makes improvements within job functions and throughout firm operations
? Responsible for maintaining a group culture of continuous improvement
? Project Delivery
o Leads group technical staff in their efforts throughout the schematic, design, production and construction
administration project phases, including technical and professional guidance

o Provides workgroup project design review (QA/QC) to assure compliance with firm design and production
standards and applicable codes and guidelines
o Coordinates and utilizes discipline-specific resources in multiple locations and timezones to achieve
project goals.
o Fills the role of PE as assigned / required, particularly on complex projects assigned within workgroup
o Fills the role of PM on select discipline-specific or -intensive projects
o Fills the role of responsible agent on commissioning and construction management projects.
o Maintains a neat and organized physical and virtual work area to allow efficient access to project
information required by other team members
Education and Experience:
? Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology
? Engineer-in-Training (EIT), or equivalent, preferred
? 8+ years applicable experience in a technical capacity; or any equivalent combination of education and
experience
?
? Experience with performance management and supervision of technical staff preferred
? Extensive knowledge and understanding of the discipline-specific principles and practices, including both design
and construction
? Knowledge and understanding of applicable codes
? Proficiency in computer aided design and strong understanding of CAD / BIM operations
Physical Requirements
? Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
