2024 Midpoint: How To Attract Candidates

Back to Blogs

With Q2 out of the way, your focus may be on hiring for the second half of the year. But an attractive salary is no longer enough to draw in applications – you need to know what potential candidates want in order to find the best talent.

What do candidates want?

WRS recently carried out a poll to find out exactly what was important to energy industry applicants, and the results revealed the following priorities:

  • Competitive salary and benefits (53%)

  • Work-life balance (28%)

  • Professional advancement (12%)

  • Inclusive company culture (7%)

While this shouldn’t be used as a blanket guide, it certainly reveals some important insights. For example, with most energy professionals giving salary and benefits as their top priority, you should adjust your job postings to reflect extra policies or packages that come with being an employee at your company.

But crucially, these findings affirm the importance of having an attractive, and unique, employee value proposition (EVP).

Create and promote your EVP

Your EVP should be as unique as the candidates you’re hoping to attract – so ensure that your values are clearly communicated in your job advert or through your employer branding. For a good starting point, review…

  • What drives your business

  • Your purpose, mission, and vision

  • What appeals to your current employees

Communicating your EVP doesn’t stop once a candidate has applied either – it should be clear throughout every step of the recruitment process. For example, during a job interview, don’t simply say you “offer opportunities for progression” – explain in detail what these look like.
